DBASS is celebrating after helping Ashbourne Community School raise €5,000 for a local charity

Friday, 13th February, 2015

Participants in the Ashbourne Community School 5k Fun Run, which took place last October, all contributed to raising the sum, which has been donated to The Laura Hickey Fund.

The annual event, which is sponsored by DBASS, this year attracted over 600 runners which included students, teachers, and parents and of course DBASS team members Dermot, Michael, Tom, Keith, Lisa and Anna.

The Ashbourne Community Fun Run organising committee has now added up the total raised on the day which comes to an impressive €5,000.

Our Managing Partner, Dermot said: "What a fantastic achievement. To have raised that much money and for so many people to have been involved from the local community is wonderful to see."

“We are a local firm, we employ local people and are proud to support local community events such as this.”

The Fun Run was the second time the event has taken place and for each event the school choose different charities to benefit from it.

The Laura Hickey Fund

This time, Ashbourne Community School have chosen to donate to local charity, The Laura Hickey Fund. Laura is a 30 year-old primary school teacher from Ashbourne, Co Meath. She has been diagnosed with cancer for the third time in four years.

The monies raised goes towards fundraising her trip to a cancer centre for excellence in the US for treatment. Laura travelled to the US for this treatment just before Christmas. What makes this cause extra special is that Laura is a former pupil of Ashbourne Community School.

The school principal Aine O’Sullivan said: “There is nothing else like the Fun Run at Ashbourne Community School. It is completely organised by our teachers, students and PTA.”

“It is a real community event. It takes a lot of hard work to organise but to see so many people there on the day enjoying it, seeing the community coming together and the charity that is benefiting – it is so rewarding.”

The next Ashbourne Community School 5k Fun Run takes place in autumn 2015.
